A police sergeant who rushed to the aid of a colleague that was assaulted by a knife attacker has been awarded the Monarch's Honor for Bravery.

Sgt Tim Ansell struggled against 27-year-old Jacob Brown following he placed a knife to the throat of his partner Sergeant Marc Foster.

Brown launched his attack as the law enforcement personnel and their partner, Police Constable Marcus Wolstencroft, were speaking to a driver after a vehicle incident in Whalley Range in mid-2023.

Brown knifed and cut both Sergeant Ansell and Sergeant Foster before PC Wolstencroft incapacitated him with a electric weapon.

"Policeman stabbed," the officer stated over his radio.

Officer-mounted and vehicle camera video shared by the agency showed Brown, that was clothed in dark clothing with a hood covering head, rush to Sergeant Foster from the rear with a weapon outstretched.

He struck the policeman who stumbled and went down to the street, after which Sgt Ansell jumped in and struggled to restrain him to the ground although being continually attacked with the blade.

PC Wolstencroft pulled his stun gun and sought a clear shot, ending the confrontation to an finish.

Sgt Ansell stated audibly: "I need something on my throat here, I got knifed in the neck."

Sergeant Ansell received two open wounds to his throat and more cuts to his limbs and torso, whereas Sergeant Foster suffered cut injuries.

Officials reported Sergeant Foster used his bare hands to stem his colleague's hemorrhaging prior to medical personnel reached the scene.

This most recent award comes subsequent to the law enforcement team won internal Valor Recognitions in late 2023 and the police federation award from the local Police Federation in spring 2024.
