Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson stated he barely escaped a potentially deadly collision during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when a pair of track officials ran across the track immediately ahead of his car

The concerning event occurred on the third lap when track officials were spotted on the circuit as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to change his damaged front wing

Competitor's Live Reaction

Shortly afterward, Racing Bulls driver Lawson spoke to his pit wall engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Could you believe what happened? I nearly... ended their lives"

"I genuinely couldn't process what I was observing"

"I exited on a brand new hard tyres, and then I arrived at Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two individuals dashing across the track"

"I nearly hit one of them, truthfully, it was extremely hazardous"

Safety Concerns Raised

"Obviously there's been a communication breakdown somewhere but I've never experienced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"

"We cannot comprehend how on a live track track officials can be authorized to just sprint across the track in that manner. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some sort of explanation, but this absolutely cannot recur"

Official Investigation Underway

The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is currently investigating the events

"Following a turn one incident, track officials was informed that fragments were located on the track at the turning point of that curve" stated the FIA

"On lap three, safety personnel were notified and made ready to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"

"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had made a pit stop, the directives to deploy officials were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was raised in that zone"

"We are still investigating what happened after that point"
